March 20–22, 2010: The World’s Longest Toilet Queue is an effort to get people to line up together on World Water Day to force governments around the world to act on sanitation issues. The Queue hopes to enter the Guinness World Record for the longest Queue in multiple locations across the world during the same time period. The Pursuit of Water is a film to be released March 22, 2010. Here is a trailer for this student film being made to document the role of water in global development. April 22, 2010: The world’s first high-level Meeting on Sanitation and Water is being held in Washington DC to discuss and urge action on sanitation and water quality management. April 25–29, 2010: 7th National Water Monitoring Conference, Denver (Colorado). The theme is “Monitoring From the Summit to the Sea.” May 3, 2010: African Rainforest Conservancy’s 19th annual Artists for Africa benefit, NYC. May 23, 2010: Energy, Water, and Global Climate Change as a Regional Agenda of the Americas: Synthesis, Integration & Assessment, San Diego, CA. Offered by Pan-American Advanced Studies Institute. International scholars will discuss research linking energy, water, and global climate change, and foster new relationships among engineers, scientists, and policy makers. Sept. 5–11, 2010: World Water Week, Stockholm (Sweden). This annual symposium is presented by the Stockholm International Water Institute, bringing together experts, practitioners, decision makers and leaders from around the globe to exchange ideas, foster new thinking and develop solutions. The 2010 theme will be: The Water Quality Challenge – Prevention, Wise Use and Abatement.

The purpose of the conference is consistent with the goals of the United Nations Decade of Water for Life. The forum will cover both hard and soft technology and will serve to promote the use of appropriate technologies. March 22: World Water Day (International) The international observance of World Water Day is an initiative that grew out of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro. In 2010, the focus will be on water quality: “Communicating water quality challenges and opportunities.” Overview of events April 22: Earth Day (United States) This year will be the 40th anniversary of Earth Day in the US, an observance designed to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth’s environment. (Earth Day is celebrated by the UN on the spring equinox, which is March 20 in 2010.) April 23, 2010: Arbor Day (United States) National Arbor Day is the last Friday in April, but many states observe Arbor Day on other dates according to best times for planting trees. May: American Wetlands Month (United States) June 8: World Oceans Day (International) September 5–11, 2010: World Water Week (International) September 26, 2010: World Rivers Day (International), always the last Sunday in September. October 4, 2010: World Habitat Day (International) The United Nations has designated the first Monday of October every year as World Habitat Day.
